Identification Labels & Signs
Work areas, tools, equipment, and storage locations should always be clearly labeled and identified. This is critical for the successful application of kaizen.
If a new machine is introduced into the workplace, it should be labeled to identify the machine and it's place in the process. Labels and signs with operating and maintenance information help workers to quickly get up to speed on machine operation.
When new components or parts are introduced, their storage locations must be clearly labeled, and they should be tagged or transported in a way (using labeled bins or pallets) such that they are clearly identified.
Don't forget about the pipes that run throughout your facility. The contents and flow direction should be clearly marked on all pipes, such that a pipe label can be seen from any location from which the pipe is visible.
Kaizen means change. Some changes are small and have not impact on working conditions. Other changes may have a significant impact on work areas and processes. Whenever there is change that impacts a worker, signs and labels should be used to visually provide needed information at the specific location and time when it is needed.
